What is the difference between a businesss coach and business mentor? Both can help you grow your business more quickly than you can yourself but which could be best for you?

What is a business coach?

The role of a business coach is to help you achieve your business goals or develop as a business leader. This can involve helping you define and stay true to a clear vision and goals for your business plus how you will achieve this. They are there to help you turn your vision and goals into reality and to navigate your way through any challenges you may face. You get coaches and mentors for most aspects of business and across all industries. Some coaches also have other skills and can help you overcome emotional or mindset blocks.

In the purest sense, one of the core skills of a coach is to ask well-crafted questions that enable you to work out the answers or next steps for yourself. So rather than sharing their own ideas, opinions or perspective, they guide you to come up with the best way forward.

What is a business mentor

A business mentor, by comparison, is somebody who has experience of what you want to do or become and will share this with you. For me personally, whenever I want to learn something new, I will look for a person who is already good at what I want to do and I will employ them as a mentor to help me to grow my business.

Can you be both?

It is also possible to find somebody who is a skilled mentor and a coach. These are people who have relevant experience which they can share as well as good coaching skills. This can be useful because there are downsides to employing someone who is only a coach, or only a mentor. A coach may not have experience of what you want to achieve. While a mentor’s experience and opinions could take you down the wrong track. By employing somebody who has the of a coach and knowledge of a mentor you get all of the benefits!

What is the best way type of support for you?

Start by asking yourself “what do I want”?
