My Lucky Escape from a ‘Love Island’ Retreat

Have you ever gone on a retreat? Or fancied going on one?

A couple of years ago I went on a retreat in Bali to help boost my recovery from burnout and adrenal fatigue.

It was one of the most self-indulgent yet much-needed experiences of my life: enjoying a few days of sun, unlimited massages, yoga, and healthy food. Pure bliss.

Finding a retreat for women over fifty

But, finding the right retreat wasn’t easy.

There are a plethora of retreats targeting young, slim, healthy, and highly active women.

Few seem to be aimed at a fifty-plus, adventurous, and slightly hippy woman with the desire to rest, recuperate and enjoy the company of like-minded women.

I remember feeling so excited when I eventually found and booked into my ideal retreat.

OMG… what have I done?

But only a couple of weeks later I started having second thoughts.

A friend had shown me the retreat’s Instagram feed filling up with photos of young women from the reality TV show Love Island. Together with other reality TV show ‘celebrities’ they were posing around the pool in their bikinis as well as being all dolled up for nights out.

With only five bedrooms, the stunning villa created the perfect space for a nourishing intimate experience. Yet that could go terribly wrong if you didn’t gel with the other guests.

OMG! What had I booked on to?

The idea of feeling I was on the set of a reality TV show was not quite the retreat I was hoping for.

Our retreat mates are so important

Thankfully, the week I was there was celeb-free.

But, their marketing had definitely started to attract an audience of much younger twenty to thirty-somethings.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love being in the company of people of all ages. I’m proud to be a quirky woman at a certain stage of life and wanted to spend a lot of time alone.

However, when spending a few days in close proximity to others, I would prefer they are women who have lived a bit, have shared values and interests.

My fellow guests were all pleasant enough even though we didn’t have much in common.

The one thing we did all agree on was that it would be good for all women to experience at least one retreat during their lifetime.

Opportunities for adventurous women

Retreats are the ultimate self-care practice.

This together with the lack of retreats for forty-plus adventurous women was one of the reasons I decided to start running my own retreats.

The first to Bali in January 2020 sold out and was an incredible experience. While intended dates have been put back due to Covid, it’s so exciting to have started booking our next retreat to Bali in June 2022.

There are still a couple of spaces if you fancy joining us?

It’s a retreat with a difference for compassionate women who want to give back and enjoy a pampering cultural experience in Bali and Lombok. Find out more <HERE>.
